”Water, water everywhere, but nothing to drink”

When Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote these words in the famous old English poem, “The Rime (sic) of the Ancient Mariner”, he was relating the experiences of a sailor returning from a long sea journey. During his voyage, the ship was becalmed in uncharted waters near the equator. Those aboard were driven mad to the point of death by a raging thirst. Ironically, the ship itself was floating on the solution to the crew’s problems - water, water everywhere, but nothing to drink.

While Coleridge wasn’t referring to the water in our homes, I am sure those immortal lines have flashed through the minds of many of us if we have ever experienced a washing machine or water heater leak, a blocked toilet, or a water overflow in the home or office.

National Hug A Plumber Day

Did you know that April 25th was National Hug-A-Plumber Day? Being a plumber is a tough job, and I doubt many of us would want to tackle some of the jobs we ask them to do!

Believe it or not, there is evidence that being a plumber was a recognized profession right back in the times of Ancient Rome, and plumbers continue to improve our health and our lives overall in the modern world.

Sir John Harrington, a godson of Elizabeth I of England, is credited with the invention of a “water closet” in 1592. It was designed with a raised cistern and a small downpipe to flush away the waste. However, this piece of invention did not reach the United States until the 1840s. Around that time, only luxury hotels and wealthy people had indoor private bathrooms.

Even as recently as 1940 nearly half of homes in the US were without complete plumbing facilities, such as a flush toilet, hot piped water, a bathtub or shower. Many people didn’t need to worry about finding a local plumber for toilet repair!

Can you imagine a life without plumbers? How could we cope? What would you choose if you had to make a choice between your Smart TV/Smartphone and the convenience of clean water, shower, and flushing toilet? Which one would give you the hardest time living without

Experienced plumbers are water specialists, who are able to design, install and repair the correct plumbing and pipework needed in a residential home, factory, or office. When seeking plumbing services to fix a stinky drain or a garbage disposal unit, you need to be confident that you are able to find the best local plumber.

The Right Tools for the Job

We can always depend on the emergency plumber we call out to have the right tool for the job. However, there are several items no home or office should be without. The householder should be able to deal with a basic drain blockage or emergency in case a 24-hour plumber is not immediately available.

💦 A plunger, used to unblock a kitchen/bathroom sink drain, or drain trap in a shower or bathtub. There are two types of plunger: a flange plunger, which is designed with a flange to fit inside a toilet, and a cup plunger , which has a flexible rubber cup to fit over a drain opening.

💦 A bottle of drain cleaner, a liquid solution to unclog a blocked drain

💦 A standard drain auger, also known as a drain snake, is a long coiled-metal cable that is attached to an angled handle or circular drum. When the handle is turned, the cable is forced through drain clogs to break them up making it easier to remove them. A word of warning: do not use it in a toilet! You need a specialist toilet drain snake with a long handle and a protective elbow, which is designed to prevent damage to the porcelain in the bottom of the toilet. Using incorrect tools could result in a costly repair!

Leak Detection

Water is a valuable commodity, but it can also be unpredictable and destructive. For a property owner, damage caused by a water leak can be a disaster. Not only the building structure but also furniture, carpets, electrical systems, and electronic equipment can be damaged. Problems caused by water damage can be exacerbated if the source of a leak is not detected as soon as possible.

Signs that there may be a water leak affecting your property:

Higher water bill: Have you noticed your water bills increasing, even though you aren’t using more water?
Unexplained cracking: Can you see cracks forming in your walls or the flooring?
Mildew: Is there any evidence of unexplained staining or mildew on any of the walls?
